Seward Alaska

Map of Alaska's Seward Highway

The 15 square mile city of Seward was named after the U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward. William H. Seward is famous for negotiating the purchase of Alaska, referred to as “Seward’s Folly”, from Russia during the Lincoln Administration. Seward is a lively little city located 125 miles south of Anchorage at the head of Resurrection Bay on the southeast coast of the Kenai Peninsula and is the perfect access point for the Kenai Fjords National Park.

Seward’s Resurrection Bay was named by Russian fur trader & explorer Alexander Baranof, in 1792. Baranof, caught in a storm on the Russian Day of Resurrection while sailing between Kodiak and Yakutat, found unexpected refuge in Seward’s Bay and thus named if after the holiday.

The population of Seward, according to the 2005 Census Bureau, is estimated at 3,016 year-around residents. Annual events include the Polar Bear Jump in January, 4th of July celebration & world famous Mount Marathon foot race, Silver Salmon Derby in August, and arts & music festival in the fall.

Seward is also famous for sport fishing, wildlife and glacier cruises, summer dog sledding, sea kayaking, flight seeing, hiking, camping as well as cross-country skiing and snow machining in the winter. Attractions include a visitor's center, museum, The Alaska Sealife Center, Kenai Fjords National Park, Harding Icefield, Exit Glacier, Chugach National Forest Ranger Station, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church (built early 1900's).

Major Marine Tours offers a half-day Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise and a full-day Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise departing from Seward during May thru September.
